Our Global Managing Partner and CEO, Tom Goodhead, visited Australia last week to meet with politicians, civil society, miners, businesses, and investors about our case against BHP over the Mariana dam disaster, Brazil’s worst ever environmental disaster.

Tom highlighted the importance of the case, the largest in legal history, with key decision makers, and called on BHP to finally do the right thing.

He met with the Australian Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek. The meeting was a valuable opportunity to discuss with the Minister how, nearly eight years later, the victims are still awaiting adequate compensation, with the lives and livelihoods of over one million people, among them some of Brazil’s most disadvantaged, irrevocably damaged.

While in Australia, Tom was featured in an array of prestigious news outlets, including:
The Australian Financial Review
The Sydney Morning Herald
ABC’s Radio National breakfast program
ABC News

“Imagine this had happened in the UK or imagine this had happened in Australia. With it happening in Brazil as well, not happening in the UK or Australia, the public awareness of it has diminished over time,” he said.

“I think that the message is really that we would seek that government, that shareholders, and that civil society encourage BHP to do the right thing.”

In all his interviews, Tom called on BHP to do the right thing over their responsibility for the Mariana dam disaster of 2015  and to finally provide justice for the 700,000 victims we represent.
