Pogust Goodhead has been named International Law Firm of the Year and Litigation Team of the Year at the Modern Law Awards, in recognition of the firm’s work on Municipio de Mariana v BHP and the Pan-NOx Emissions litigation.
The Modern Law Awards recognise excellence and innovation across the legal sector. To win both categories in the same year reflects the breadth and ambition of the firm’s practice, spanning international environmental accountability and large-scale domestic emissions litigation.
The Mariana litigation, brought on behalf of hundreds of thousands of Brazilian claimants, resulted in a historic judgment holding global mining corporation BHP liable for Brazil’s worst ever environmental disaster. The Pan-NOx Emissions litigation represents one of the most significant consumer group actions brought before the English courts, pursuing justice for millions of vehicle owners affected by illegal emissions.
Both cases have demanded new models of legal collaboration, advanced technology, and operational excellence at scale, spanning multiple jurisdictions and disciplines.
Alicia Alinia, CEO, commented:
“Recognition like this is appreciated but it also serves as a reminder of the responsibility and humility that comes with the work we do.
Acting on cases of this scale, including Mariana and our emissions litigation, amongst the largest in English legal history, is a privilege. These are complex, long running matters that only proceed because of the trust by our clients, and the continued support of our aligned partners.
None of this is possible without the exceptional work of our lawyers and operational teams, whose commitment and discipline underpin everything we do.”
