Important update on the Mariana Case in England (Hearing held on 2 and 3 July 2025)

July 4, 2025

This week, an important hearing took place which marked the beginning of the second phase of the case. Here are the key points:

  • The Court will now begin analysing the damages caused by the dam collapse and the possible compensation that BHP may be required to pay.
  • Our legal team highlighted that several areas have already been recognised as affected in Brazil, which should help speed up the proceedings in England.
  • The selection of model cases was also discussed — in other words, examples of victims whose situations will serve as a basis for calculating damages across different categories of claimants: individuals, municipalities, Indigenous and Quilombola communities, among others.
  • The Judge is expected to issue new written directions in the coming days. We remain confident in the progress of the case!

It’s important to remember: over 400,000 people were left out of the agreement in Brazil and rely solely on this legal action in England to seek justice.

We remain committed to the fight for justice!
